MONROE POLICE K-9 UNIT

The Monroe Police Department’s K9 Units primary function is to provide support to the Patrol Division. The canine’s superior sense of smell, hearing, speed, and vigilance make them able to accomplish tasks which would normally be impossible for a regular patrol officer. Monroe Police Department’s K9 unit is currently comprised of two K9 teams: K9 Murphy and his handler Ofc. J. McAulay, and K9 Riggs and his handler Ofc. M. DeCarli. 

K9 Murphy was born and raised in Hungary on 7/20/2013. He was purchased through donations and grants from Renbar Kennels and trained by Lt William Scribner of the North American Police Working Dog Association.

K9 Riggs was born in the Czech Republic on 8/9/2015. He was purchased through donations and he was trained by Lt. William Scribner of the North American Police Working Dog Association.

When not on duty, both K9’s reside at the homes of their handlers. They are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  

The teams conduct a minimum of 16 hours of in service training per month with their training region and an additional hour per day with their handlers. Both K9 teams are certified through the Connecticut Police Working Dog Association and the North American Police Working Dog Association in the following areas:

• Tracking
• Evidence Recovery
• Building Searches
• Area Searches
• Narcotics Detection
