Records Unit
The Records Unit is staffed by two civilian employees under the command of the Support Services Lieutenant. The Records Unit is responsible for the maintenance of all department records and reports, the proper dissemination of these records, processing of Freedom of Information requests and conducting Criminal Record Checks.
Hours: 7:30am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday
The police department understands that many people can not come to the police department to obtain a copy of a report during normal business hours. You can contact the Records Unit and request a copy of a report and it will be held for you at the Communications Center counter which is open 24 hours a day.
Note: Reports can take up to three business days before they are ready for release.
The fee for a report is $.50 per page. If you want a copy of multiple reports (such as a copy of all accidents that occurred between certain dates or at a particular location) or other documents such as photographs or tape recordings (if available), you must submit a letter to the Chief of Police requesting this information. After receipt of the letter you will be contacted as to the availability of the requested records and the fees which apply to your request.
The release of information and report copies are limited by State of Connecticut General Statutes. Types of reports that will not be released are:
Pending cases
Arrest reports
Medical records
Signed statements of witnesses
Information to be used in a prospective law enforcement action
Investigatory techniques
Arrest records of juveniles
Information on the victim of sexual assault
Uncorroborated allegations
Criminal Record Checks
The Records Division will perform local criminal record checks for residents of the Town of Monroe. There is a $5.00 fee for this service. These checks will only be for the Town of Monroe. For a check of State of Connecticut criminal records you must contact the Connecticut State Police Bureau of Identification. A request form for the State criminal records check can be obtained from the Department of Public Safety Web site: www.state.ct.us/dps/spbi.htm
Refer to Connecticut General Statute 1-210 for a complete list.
