Dear Monroe Families,

We write this letter to address the tragic death of George Floyd and the ensuing protests that have followed. As a school district and town, we are committed to providing a community where all people feel safe, supported, and loved. We support a Monroe that is free of bias, where all people’s contributions are respected, and everyone is treated equally.

The backdrop of the current pandemic makes these times even more difficult and challenging. We know that kids have many questions about the current unrest they are witnessing and, as adults, we do not have all the answers. We are providing a few resources to help facilitate these conversations with your children. Families should also feel free to reach out to their children’s principal or guidance counselor for additional supports or resources.

We will not tolerate any injustice in our schools or in our town. We are committed to creating an environment where all citizens maximize their intellectual, creative, social, emotional, and physical potential. This is impossible if some people in any community feel marginalized or disenfranchised. Monroe is a great town, but we must always strive to ensure we are being inclusive to all people. We invite everyone to be a part of this important conversation.

We will be well served to follow the advice of Mahatma Gandhi when he said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
