Volunteer Information and Opportunities

Purpose and Goals for the Use of Volunteers:
The Town of Monroe recognizes its need for assistance from members of the community to help fulfill the goals of the Town's mission statement which states:
We realize that the strength of our mission lies in our commitment to the following values:
Pride in our work, in our dedication to public service, and in being the best we can be.
Honesty in all our actions with fellow employees and citizens.
Participation by citizens and Town employees in setting and attaining the Town's goals.
Innovation in meeting the present and future needs of the Town.
Loyalty to our community and to each staff member.
Respect for and belief in individual differences and the worth of every person.

Job Description
Specific job descriptions are in place for all volunteers which include a list of tasks and prohibited activities. The job description follows the current format used for employees including ADA requirements.

Applications
Individuals interested in volunteering for the Town of Monroe are required to complete an application. A background check will be performed for all volunteer positions. Parent permission for minors (ages 13 - 18) is required.
Volunteer Application

Placement of Volunteer Worker
Interviews will be conducted between prospective volunteers and department supervisors or their designee. Once the interview process is complete appropriate placement will be communicated to the volunteer from the department selecting the volunteer.

Volunteer Orientation
Volunteers will review the appropriate policies which include a zero tolerance for weapons, illegal substances, and any form of harassment, as well as a confidentiality statement. Volunteers will be informed of all appropriate policies and procedures including emergency action plans. Volunteers will be expected to notify staff if they are unable to report for their scheduled shift.

Volunteer Training
An annual review of safety and emergency plans will be conducted for those volunteers who work in the building regularly and interact with the public. Adult and minor volunteers who provide services for a one time event will be exempt from applications and training. They will be apprised of rules concerning appropriate behavior and emergency procedures.

Volunteer Recognition
Proper management of volunteers involves acknowledgement and appreciation of the duties and job performed by these dedicated individuals. The month of April is the designated "Volunteer Recognition" month.

Tracking Volunteer Hours
Volunteers are required to sign in and record their hours. Volunteers are expected to notify their supervisor if they are unable to report for a scheduled shift. This facilitates proper record keeping and establishes support for the continuation of the program.
